My name is Ken Wharton, author of “A Long, Long War: Soldiers’ Voices from the British Army, Northern Ireland 1969-98.” Volume I will be published by Helion on April 2, 2008 - Order on line and receive a 10% discount.
I am a former British soldier. The book is absolutely pro-squaddie and gives the story of the troubles from a squaddie’s perspective.
My book is a compilation of stories told by former British Soldiers serving in Northern Ireland. Profound thanks to all those who contributed so far.
There were way too many contributions for the first volume so a second book is underway.
Volume II
The experiences of British soldiers and UDR personnel. Written from the perspective of the ordinary squaddie - men and officers.
Volume II will be in print by early 2009. This second book, another squaddie's eye view of events in Northern Ireland 1969-97 will focus on specific incidents and specific places; there will be a Chapter which deals with the ‘Murph, Turf Lodge, one which deals with the Ardoyne, one on the Lower Falls, on the Bogside and the Creggan and so on. Part of the book will deal with the bandit country of South Armagh with chapters on XMG, Belleek, Lisnaskea etc. I will invite former squaddies to describe their emotions felt during firefights, during IED detonations. Further, I will ask them to put into their own words their feelings in relation to the populace on both sides of the sectarian divide. In short: TO CONTINUE TO TELL THEIR STORY
I need you to write to me and tell me YOUR story, tell me of YOUR experiences, tell me what's in YOUR heart. All contributors will be acknowledged or you can have anonymity if you wish.
